5 ways to maintain healthy eating habits during the holidays

Don’t look now, but Christmas is right around the corner! One of the best things about this time of year is the amazing holiday food. Gingerbread, pumpkin pie, peppermint bark, eggnog, and fudge, oh my! While these treats may get our taste buds watering, they can also cause our waistline to fluctuate. Fortunately, Camino Vida’s Nutrition  Coordinator, Reatna Taylor is giving us some tips on how to enjoy the Christmas holiday without overindulging in some of our favorite foods or snacks.

  1. Keep Up Routine Movement

During the holiday season it can be easy to become sedentary. Make sure you’re still getting a good amount of exercise by going on walks or doing chores around the house.

  1. Add More Vegetables

Holiday parties and gatherings aren’t exactly known for serving healthy food, but it’s important to work in some vegetables whenever possible. If there’s a veggie tray, add a few pieces of celery or carrots to go with your typical holiday food. It’s a small gesture, but it ensures that you’re eating a balanced meal.

Reatna Taylor, Camino Vida’s Nutrition Coordinator explains some healthy eating techniques to a Camino Vida patient.

  1. Don’t Skip Meals

Whenever we take time away from work and our busy schedules, it’s easy for our normal routine to get thrown off. People typically sleep in more during the holidays, which means there’s a temptation to skip breakfast or sometimes even lunch. This can cause you to overindulge certain meals and eat bigger portions than you’re accustomed to.

  1. Monitor Alcohol Intake

The festive time of year for some can mean an increase in alcohol consumption. However, there is a way to enjoy your favorite Christmas cocktail, while also practicing healthy habits. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends limiting alcohol consumption to two drinks for men and one drink for women. Drinking water between drinks will help to keep you hydrated and also mindful of your alcohol intake so you can enjoy this season with those you love!

  1. Enjoy Seasonal Treats

It’s ok to treat yourself during the holiday season within reason. Enjoy a slice of pumpkin pie, peppermint bark, or a drink of eggnog. These seasonal treats are only around once a year, and it’s perfectly fine to enjoy them as you celebrate this time of year with friends and family!
